Jeannie, I got my CDL through the Board of Education to drive a school bus. It is only a Class B . That was fairly easy except for the air brakes, I didn't know anything about air brakes and I had to take that portion of the test twice. To drive a tractor and trailer you have to have a Class A, that was a whole different ball game and I had to take the test three times just to get my permit. Va. might have an easier test than Ky. does, it was tough. There were general knowledge questions on the test that were not covered in the book that I had no general knowledge of at the time. Even the examiner agreed with me that there were questions that were not covered in the book. Each time I took the test it was a little different so there was no way of knowing the questions that were wrong from the previous test. It cost me $60.00 just for the permit and mine runs out in Aug. so I'm pestering my dispatchers to let me train on a tractor before it runs out. They don't want to loose me as a straight truck driver because I've never turned down a run or complained about where they send me, so they are procrastinating. But time is running out and I'm not about to waste that $60.00 .
I've used up all my time for this week so I am off all weekend, I like it when it works out that way.

Thanks for all the info. The book for VA doesn't look all that easy either.

How many miles/hours of driving a tractor and trailer do you have to have before you get the actual Class A license?

Hope you had a great weekend!
